Meet Our Interns

Cleveland office Haruna Sulemana: Haruna joined Policy Matters Ohio in Spring 2017 for a semester practicum. He is currently pursuing a Master’s program in Nonprofit Management at the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences (MSASS), Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). Prior to his enrollment in CWRU, Haruna received a Master’s degree in Public Policy from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) in Tokyo, Japan. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Arabic and Study of Religions from the University of Ghana in Accra, Ghana, where he also worked as a teaching assistant in the Arabic section of the Department of Modern Languages. He has experience in the diplomatic service, teaching, program management and research. Columbus office Ravleen Kaur is a junior at The Ohio State University studying public management, leadership and policy with a concentration in public health. She is interested in increasing access to and affordability of health care and other human services. She is currently a public health fellow at the Pure Water Access Project, Inc. and writes regularly for Brown Girl Magazine, LLC. Drew Murray is a senior at Ohio State University majoring in criminology and is the Scioto county recipient of the Land Grant Opportunity Scholarship. Drew is interested in policies that create reentry supports for formerly incarcerated people and hopes to learn more about how policy is shaped and implemented during his internship at Policy Matters. Jessica Shakesprere studies political science and biology at The Ohio State University and is passionate about increasing fair access to health and human services, higher education, and overall civic engagement. She edits for the Alger Magazine, an OSU publication featuring political commentary and analysis. She is also a public health fellow at the Pure Water Access Project. Jessica previously worked on WOSU’s All Sides with Ann Fisher as an intern producer. Zac Simmons is a senior at the Ohio State University where he majors in sociology and criminology. He previously worked at OSU’s University Center for the Advancement of Teaching where he assisted department staff with event planning, classroom logistics and other administrative duties. In 2013, Zac spent a week volunteering on the Glemary Farm in Vanceburg, Kentucky where he staffed the food pantry. He is an Eagle Scout and a high school ultimate frisbee coach. Zac grew up in Columbus and graduated from Bishop Watterson High School.
