Six Great Clips

In this week’s eNews we highlight some of the great press coverage our research has been generating, including work by Wendy Patton, Amy Hanauer, Amanda Woodrum, Zach Schiller, and Hannah Halbert.
Media mashup – Check out some great recent press, starting with an op-ed in the Cincinnati Enquirer by Wendy Patton. The piece, which ran as a counterpoint to the administration, describes how Ohio’s new budget bill makes our tax code less fair, raises less money than it should and misses opportunities for Ohioans.
In back-to-back appearances on Ideastream’s Sound of Ideas, Amy Hanauer talked about the likely impact of tax changes in the state budget, and Amanda Woodrum made a pitch for efficiency and other sustainable approaches to cleaner, better energy policies.
As budget negotiations came to a close in June, pieces in the Columbus Dispatch and other Ohio papers cited work by Zach Schiller and the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy that showed that top earners fare best under Ohio’s tax plan, while on average the lowest-income Ohioans will end up paying more.
Our January report on Ohio’s charter school closure law earned a story in the Plain Dealer about how White Hat Management, along with other for-profit charter operators, has changed school names and shuffled school charters to keep open schools whose years in academic emergency meant they should have been shuttered.
Finally, a solid article on Cleveland-area job losses in the Plain Dealer quotes our researcher Hannah Halbert: “… it’s clear that, over many, many months of data, national and state austerity policy has held back job growth in Ohio. Public investment is particularly important in our metro areas.”
