In August, I'll hang up my server's apron and head to law school, leaving the job I've worked for six years. Since I was 16, my near-constant employment in serving positions has allowed me to pay my tuition, rent and put away some savings.
However, in recent months, the U.S. Department of Labor has sent my industry into a tailspin, threatening the security and earning potential of workers like me. Soon, servers and bartenders -- more than 120,000 in Ohio -- could lose their tips due to a proposed rule change in the Fair Labor Standards Act.
