Groups call on Gov. DeWine to continue unemployment compensation to people who face risks returning to work

Ohio employers received notice last Friday that guidance on the state’s COVID-19 policy on refusal to return to work will be released this week.
Policy Matters Ohio and the Ohio Poverty Law Center are concerned that a narrow policy that fails to spell out good cause exemptions will exclude many working people who have real, justifiable reasons for not returning to work from receiving unemployment compensation (UC) benefits.
Workers who voluntarily leave work due to reasonable COVID-19 related issues should not be denied UC benefits. Unemployment compensation continued eligibility requirements should not adversely impact public health and our shared success of slowing the spread of this virus.
Attached is a letter the groups sent to Governor DeWine today spelling out recommendations for return to work policy.
