Numeric news from Policy Matters
$1,500: Amount by which Ohio’s typical (median) household income in 2022 was less than in 2021.
$9,035: Amount by which Ohio’s typical household income falls short of the national median.
215,000+: Number of Ohioans aged 65 and over who were in poverty last year.
446,159: Number of Ohio children who were in poverty last year.
~3.5 million: Number of households surveyed by the U.S. Census Bureau each year for the American Community Survey (ACS), the source of the above data points. ACS data were released this week and executive director Hannah Halbert pointed out how clearly they demonstrate the need for policy that puts people first.
13,000: Number of autoworkers nationwide who walked off the job at 11:59 p.m. Thursday night — including 5,800 from a Stellantis plant in Toledo. It’s the first time in United Auto Workers history the union has struck all of the Big 3 automakers (Ford, GM and Stellantis, formerly Chrysler). In a new blog, senior researcher Michael Shields and researcher Molly Bryden describe the UAW’s long history of fighting on the frontlines for workers to win their share of the wealth that they build and demand equal rights for all.
5,639,700: Number of jobs in Ohio in August, based on the latest numbers from the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services. As Michael Shields explains in this month’s JobWatch, that number now technically stands as the most jobs in state history, since it was announced along with a downward revision of the July estimate, which was thought to be the record at the time it was first announced. (It’s less confusing than it sounds.) Check out JobWatch for the details.
