997: Number of childcare programs Ohio lost from 2019-23. That’s 11% of all programs in the state. In their latest release, Molly Bryden and Ali Smith explore how environmental and economic conditions intersect to harm childcare providers and the kids they help raise. The report focuses on licensed childcare providers in Cuyahoga County and proposes innovative ways to help children, families, and early-childhood educators statewide. It also has some very neat interactive maps!
19.95%: Median raise given to the CEOs of Ohio’s largest corporate employers last year.
0.45%: Median pay cut those CEOs gave their median employees. For more infuriating comparisons, check out this year’s report on CEO pay, from Heather Smith.
2: Number of semiconductor plants Intel promised — in writing — to build in New Albany before the end of 2028.
$600M: Amount already paid by the state of Ohio to subsidize construction of those plants.
1: Number of semiconductor plants we now expect to be complete before the deadline. Check out Bailey Sandin on NBC4’s The Spectrum for the details, and how we think the governor should respond.
60K: Conservative estimate of how many Ohioans will be stripped of their health insurance if legislators get their way. They are requiring Ohio’s Dept. of Medicaid to ask the federal government for special permission to create new, expensive, and complicated barriers to coverage. And they’re doing it on a short timeline during the holiday season, when people are less likely to raise objections. Let’s show them we won’t stand for it. A new blog post from Kathryn Poe explains the changes and how to make your voice heard before the January 16th deadline.
$53B: Estimated economic output generated by immigrant workers and business owners in Ohio. There are lots of other ways immigrants contribute to our communities, and lots of moral reasons to resist the mass deportations promised by the incoming administration. But when you hear racist dog-whistles and foghorns about the economic impact of immigrants on our state, you can push back with data to show that impact is positive.
2025: Policy Matters Ohio remains steadfast in our mission to make Ohio a place of equity, inclusion, sustainability, and real vibrancy for all. Our plans for 2025 include fighting for a state budget that puts our collective resources to work for all Ohioans, working to fundamentally change the way we publicly fund childcare in Ohio, and producing new research on the fines and fees charged to incarcerated youth and their caregivers. We are asking for your support as we find our way forward together. Will you join us? Donate here.

The 135th General Assembly is closing out its Lame Duck session. They’ve taken action on a couple bills we support, both of which Gov. DeWine is expected to sign into law! The Pay Stub Protection Act will help working people ensure they are being paid what they’re owed for every hour of work. And HB 29, which limits the use of driver’s license suspensions as punishment for non-driving-related offenses, was passed with provisions that had been stripped, and that you may have helped get reinstated! For more on the movement to reform the use of driver’s license suspensions in Ohio, revisit video of our Drive to Justice Summit. The discussion of SB 37 begins here, and the discussion of HB 29 begins here.
