A Dozen Ways the D.C Deficit Discussion Hurts Ohio

September 07, 2011

Twelve federal legislators, including Ohio Senator Rob Portman, have been appointed to a committee charged with developing a proposal to cut an additional $1.2 trillion from the federal debt. The proposal they present could change Ohio. If they replace the lost revenue and return to tax levels that sustained a growing economy in the 1990s, Ohio’s future would brighten substantially. If they focus on spending cuts alone, and slash $1.2 trillion on top of the $917 billion already cut, Ohio would lose critical services and jobs. If they fail to agree on any proposal at all, a process called automatic sequestration will kick in, generating a $1.2 trillion additional spending reduction in the form of across-the-board cuts for the next decade. Policy Matters Ohio outlines the mechanics of the Budget Control Act of 2011 and illustrates through tables, charts and graphs which Ohio services are in the crosshairs.
