Policy Matters Ohio is seeking a research fellow to join our fines and fees policy team. This team focuses on criminal justice fees and fines that states and localities impose to raise revenue for court operations, police departments, and other public services. The team will conduct research into the effects of these fees on families and communities and identify policy solutions to eliminate revenue-generating policies that criminalize poverty and create barriers to opportunity.

What you’ll do:
- Produce high-quality policy research and analysis using a gender, race, ability, and class lens in collaboration with the fines and fees team.
- Support engagement of a broad and diverse community of stakeholders, policymakers, and the public.
- Collaborate with the communications staff to create a variety of traditional and digital products.
- Grow as a researcher and analyst by participating in learning opportunities offered by state and national network partners.
Additional responsibilities:
- Support a work culture that is adaptable and open to change and experimentation, while being committed to growth and accountability.
- Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have 1-3 years of experience in criminal justice or public policy research and have at least a bachelor’s degree in a related field or demonstrated experience-based equivalents. A higher degree, such as a master’s degree or professional degree is preferred but not required. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate:
- An understanding of or interest in developing intersectional equity analysis to address barriers to opportunity and anti-racist policy positions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to work efficiently and collaboratively with others, and to be flexible and creative.
- Initiative to identify emerging policy challenges and opportunities, and to respond with timely research and analysis.
- Experience working with large data sets, survey development and data, and statistical analysis and data visualizations.
Details:
- This position is a 2-year fellowship, that will be extended depending on funding.
- Policy Matters staff are represented by Workers United, an SEIU affiliate. This is a bargaining unit position.
- Reports to the Executive Director.
- Based in Columbus or Cleveland, Ohio
- Some travel within and out of the state.
- Hybrid work, two-days in office.
- Generous leave and holiday PTO.
- Salary range $57,000-$66,000 with health, dental, vision, and a generous retirement contribution.
